At Flathead Electric Cooperative, every day is cybersecurity day, as we work to protect the integrity of the electric grid and our members’ information.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a collaboration between government and private industry to raise awareness about digital security and empower everyone to protect their personal data from digital forms of crime. First held in 2004, Cybersecurity Awareness Month is co-led by the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCSA) to raise awareness about cybersecurity.

In short, Cybersecurity Awareness Month promotes a safer, more secure, and more trusted internet. Everyone has a right to safe internet, and your Co-op reminds you that each of us plays a role in the cybersecurity of our community, state, and nation. Take these simple steps to protect yourself online:

  • Choose a variety of strong passwords. Consider using a password manager, too.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication whenever offered, such as when signing into your bank account with your login and password and receiving a text message with a code to confirm it’s really you logging in.
  • Update your software.
  • Recognize and report phishing. Take a common sense look at your e-mails. Who is this from? Were you expecting this email? Are there unusual numbers, misspellings, or grammatical errors in the e-mail? When in doubt, pick up the phone and call to verify the sender. If it’s phishing – a bad actor trying to obtain information from you – report it to your e-mail provider!

Concern for our community is what powers your electric cooperative. Connect with us anytime on our website.
