Flathead Electric Cooperative is committed to proactively reducing wildfire risk to protect our members, communities, and critical infrastructure. Because wildfire mitigation is an ongoing responsibility, this work must take place across the system year-round. Your Co-op maintains a comprehensive Wildfire Mitigation Plan that outlines organizational and operational practices. This plan is regularly reviewed and updated in accordance with state law and industry best practices.
How Your Co-op Reduces Wildfire Risk
We work with local partners and use inspections, equipment upgrades and vegetation management to reduce wildfire risk and protect our communities and electric grid.
Enhanced Inspections
Advanced tools, like drones and remote sensing, help inspect lines and equipment so potential issues can be found early.
Wildlife Protection
Specialized equipment helps prevent animal contact, reducing outages.
Protective Devices
Devices on power poles help reduce the risk of sparks and quickly isolate problem areas.
Vegetation Management
Trees and vegetation near power lines are regularly inspected and cleared before they interfere with equipment.
Design and Construction
Safety guides how the electric system is built and maintained, from proper wire spacing to replacing aging poles and equipment before they become a risk.
Underground Lines
Where practical, some power lines are placed underground to help prevent problems caused by overhead equipment.
