Backup and Standby Power Systems
You may elect to install a backup power system when you build, including a standby generator, a backup battery energy storage system, or a combination of both. Permanently installed backup power systems capable of supplying power to a residence during a utility outage must be connected to your wiring system by a permanently installed transfer switch or other FEC approved isolation device intended for that purpose. This equipment is used to automatically or manually isolate your home’s electrical system from the Co-op’s system before backup power is supplied during an outage. These devices shall be designed and installed so that, when operating in backup or outage mode, the generator or battery storage system cannot backfeed and energize the Co-op’s distribution system. Compliance with these provisions is necessary for the safety of FEC personnel and equipment.
Battery energy storage systems normally operate in parallel with the Co‑op’s system during normal conditions for charging, load management, or other grid‑connected functions. However, any battery system capable of energizing a residence during an outage must include an FEC approved isolation device that prevents energizing the Co‑op’s system when utility service is interrupted.
Portable generators shall not be connected through your house wiring system at any time unless the connection is made through a permanently installed transfer switch or isolation device. All transfer switches, isolation devices, and transfer operating schemes must meet applicable building codes and be inspected by the appropriate governmental electrical inspector.
The Co-op will require an inspection be made by Co-op personnel prior to operation of any new or retrofitted generator or battery system installation capable of supplying power during an outage.

GenerLink Transfer Switches – 200 AMP services only
One version of a transfer switch is the GenerLink Transfer Switch, which can be purchased at a few locations locally and installed by Co-op staff at the member’s location behind their meter base.
It’s important to note, however, that these transfer switches are only good for services 200 AMPs or less. CL320 meter bases will not accept the GenerLink.

Net Metering
Net metering allows members with a Co-op approved renewable-fueled generation system (for example, solar) to send surplus electricity back onto the Co-op’s distribution system and receive a credit that offsets electricity consumed from the grid. Your meter measures both the electricity you take from the utility system and the electricity your renewable generation system delivers to it.

To connect a system that will export excess electricity to the Co-op’s distribution system, you must submit a Small Generation Interconnection Request to begin the review and set up your net metering account. Applications must be submitted prior to installation, as designs are subject to review and may require modification to meet FEC specifications and obtain permission to operate. Emerging or new technologies or interconnection techniques may take more time to review and approve, so members are strongly encouraged to submit and secure application approval prior to purchase and installation of equipment. All net metering installations, interconnections, and ongoing operations must comply with all current Cooperative policies, technical standards, safety requirements, and any local, state, or federal regulations in effect at the time of application and throughout the duration of service.
