On March 13, Flathead Electric Cooperative’s Roundup for Safety program awarded $31,245 in grants supporting community safety projects proposed by eight nonprofit organizations, including Libby High School Softball and the Little Libby Loggers program. Both are focused on youth baseball and softball and are working to improve field safety. Both requested assistance in purchasing poly fence caps and covers. Little Libby Loggers also asked for help providing safety nets for its four baseball/softball fields and one t-ball field.
Brittaney Stapley presented on behalf of Little Libby Loggers. She told the Roundup for Safety Board, “Installing fence safety caps and covers will protect athletes from injuries caused by exposed chain link fence tops, reducing cuts and impact risks. Nets will prevent stray balls from entering spectator areas, improving the safety of parents, coaches, and fans.”
Libby High School Softball’s Kellen MacDonald also spoke to the improved safety that poly fence caps create for chain link fences. He shared that the Libby High School softball field’s fence was completely funded by over 25 businesses in the Libby area, and that the poly fence caps were the last step in completing the project.
The Roundup for Safety Board awarded the Little Libby Loggers $4,000 towards purchasing nets and caps and Libby High School Softball $1,500 for caps.
March grantees also include:
- Montana Kayak Academy – $3,410 – safety training
- Flathead 4-H Foundation – $6,000 – smoke detectors, CO2 alarms, electrical safety
- Humane Society of NW Montana – $2,335 – radios
- St. Joseph’s Catholic Church – $3,000 – AEDs
- Kalispell Montessori – $6,000 – safety doors
- Flathead High School – $5,000 – mental health safety awareness
Roundup for Safety funding comes from participating Flathead Electric Cooperative members who allow their monthly electric bills to be rounded up to the nearest dollar.
