Policies or court decisions that reduce access to this resource don’t eliminate the need for electricity; they shift costs onto higher-priced alternatives that ultimately show up on electric bills.

Why does hydropower matter to Flathead members?

What happens if hydropower is reduced?
Electricity still has to come from somewhere. Replacing hydropower often means higher-cost power, increased market volatility, and greater risk during extreme weather — all of which affect members’ bills.
Is this about choosing power over fish or the environment?
No. Montana has a long history of supporting both environmental stewardship and reliable energy. The goal is balanced, science-based solutions — not policies that create affordability and reliability crises.
