In 2025, the federal government stopped the production of pennies and predicted that pennies in circulation would become less available. We are now experiencing that decline and the Cooperative is no longer able to maintain an inventory of pennies for cash transactions. Other coins, including nickels, dimes, and quarters, will continue to be accepted.
When a cash payment results in a balance that cannot be settled exactly without pennies, the remaining amount will be applied as a credit to the member’s account. Any credit will appear on the member’s next billing statement and will automatically be applied toward future electric service charges.
For example, if your payment amount is $100.02 and you pay $100.05 in cash, the remaining $0.03 will be applied as a credit to your account.
Members are encouraged to bring exact payment amounts whenever possible. Flathead Electric Cooperative also offers a variety of payment options, including payments by phone, online payments, automatic bank draft, check, and debit card, and credit card.
