Grant to provide safer access to weather station

A $5,900 Roundup for Safety grant to the Friends of the Flathead Avalanche Center (FOFAC) will go toward heated sensor elements and installation for the Big Mountain Weather Station located at the top of Whitefish Mountain Resort. This grant will help address safety issues for those accessing and maintaining the weather station and will also improve the accuracy of the data collected. The hourly data helps public safety organizations make critical decisions. These groups include local search and rescue teams, air ambulance services, and wildland firefighters.

In addition to the FOFAC grant, Flathead Electric Cooperative’s Roundup for Safety Board also awarded a grant of $700 to Elrod Elementary School for classroom emergency kits, bringing the total awarded at the February meeting to $6,600.

Roundup for Safety is a voluntary program for Flathead Electric Cooperative members who allow their electric bills to be rounded up to the next dollar, with the extra money going into a fund for community nonprofit safety projects. The Co-op is grateful to all who participate in enhancing the safety of our community.
