In December, Johnson informed the Cooperative’s Board of Trustees of his intent to retire effective July 1, 2026, allowing time for a thoughtful leadership transition.
In November, FEC General Manager & CEO Mark Johnson’s steadfast leadership, innovative vision, and deep commitment to community service were honored by the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce, which named him 2025 Businessperson of the Year.
Johnson has served as general manager since 2013, guiding the Cooperative through significant growth, rapid technological change, and an evolving energy landscape. During his tenure, FEC has strengthened system reliability, expanded local renewable energy resources, advanced wildfire mitigation efforts, and maintained a strong focus on member service and financial stewardship.
“Mark’s steady leadership and commitment to cooperative values have positioned Flathead Electric for long-term success,” said Stacey Schnebel, president of FEC’s Board of Trustees. “This recognition reflects the respect he has earned across our community and the broader electric cooperative industry.”

Per Schnebel, the Board will begin a deliberate and transparent process to determine the Cooperative’s next leader. “Our responsibility is to ensure a smooth transition that builds on the strong foundation Mark has established while preparing Flathead Electric to meet future challenges and opportunities,” added Schnebel.
Johnson’s Businessperson of the Year honor highlights the lasting impact of his leadership and service to the Flathead Valley.
