The high-voltage transmission line that supplies a community may travel many miles through different terrain and weather conditions. BPA may identify extreme wildfire risk along a remote or upstream portion of the transmission path even when conditions in the community receiving the power appear calm.
Because electricity must travel across that transmission path to reach our local system, de-energizing a high-risk section can interrupt service downstream.
