When it comes to digging on your property, it only takes a few inches of misplaced ambition to transform a peaceful Saturday afternoon into a neighborhood-wide blackout, or worse, a dangerous emergency. Many people assume utility pipes and cables are buried several feet deep, but the reality is far more unpredictable. Due to soil erosion, shifting ground, or other issues, vital utility lines can sit just a few feet below the surface. Even a standard garden spade or a power auger for a fence post can strike a high-pressure gas line or a high-voltage cable in a matter of seconds.
