Teresa Byrd Wins Essay Contest

Trip to Washington, D.C. is a Dream Come True

Congratulations to Teresa Byrd from Columbia Falls High School for being chosen to represent Flathead Electric Cooperative during the 2007 Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. You can see how excited she is about winning this trip to our nation's capitol by the size of her smile.

Teresa and other students submitted essays on the following topic. "Our region has just experienced a devastating storm, knocking out power and displacing residents. Community officials and leaders have granted you authority to make key decisions to facilitate restoration. However, due to the extensive damage, you will have access to only two hours of electricity per day for the next seven days. Describe how you would utilize the power more efficiently to help your community maximize your recovery efforts."

Teresa is the daughter of Gerard and Loretta Byrd. "I have always wanted to see Washington, D.C.," said Teresa. "It would be amazing to see everything, but right now I think the Library of Congress, Holocaust Museum and the Vietnam War Memorial are pretty high on my list."

Just a few of her extra-curricular activities include being a wrestling team manager, a track athlete and helping serve in the community kitchen.

The 26 students chosen by Montana cooperatives will leave the day after school ends in June for a seven-day all expense paid trip by their respective co-ops. Approximately 1,800 high school students from electric cooperatives will visit the capitol that week. The Montana students' itinerary is full of sightseeing and includes a personal meeting with each of the congressmen who represent our state.

We look forward to hearing from Teresa when she returns with her experiences and memories. She will likely share her smile and a few stories if you ask her.
