Students learn
about state government
Leaders of Tomorrow
travel to Helena
A group of future
leaders got a first-hand look at state government during a trip to Montana’s
capital city sponsored in part by Flathead Electric.
Twenty-three high school juniors, representing all high
schools in Flathead County, traveled to Helena in February as part of the
Leaders of Tomorrow program (formerly Youth Leadership Flathead) that helps
equip students to be leaders.
The students began the program in October and the trip
to Helena was the fifth session of the year.
The students visited the state Legislature, attended
committee hearings and met with state officials in the capitol. They also
visited Carroll College to get an overview of college life and toured the
Montana Historical Society Museum.
Response to the trip was enthusiastic. In comment
sheets, the group members cited a variety of highlights and several called
it an “awesome” trip.
The United Way took over management of the Leaders of
Tomorrow program this year from the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce.
“It was a natural fit, because United Way does a lot of work with youth,”
said Sherry Stevens Wulf, executive director of the United Way.
The objective of the annual trip to Helena is to expose
students to government. Leaders of Tomorrow is a year-long program for high
school juniors designed to inform, motivate and develop leadership qualities
through seminars and interaction with community leaders and decision-makers.
Flathead Electric has been a major sponsor of the program for several years.
The United Way is currently accepting applications for
next year’s Leaders of Tomorrow’s Class. For more information, call the
