FEC Sponsors Washington D.C. Youth Tour Participant

Bigfork's Kelsey Smith Will Travel to Nation's Capitol in June

Funded by unclaimed capital credits, Flathead electric sponsors one youth per year for the Washington D.C. Youth Tour. With an itinerary developed by our statewide Montana Electric Cooperatives' Association, the tour brings together a group of more than 30 highly talented, ambitious young people from across the state. These students join kids from other rural electric cooperatives across the nation. Last year there were over 1,400 students learning about our nation's capitol and further developing their leadership skills.

Kelsey Smith

Kelsey submitted the winning essay answering the question: "Montana has just experienced a severe storm and you area will have electric power curtailed to only one hour per day for the next two weeks. You have your choice of three electrically powered items that can be used during that time. What three items would you choose and why would they be your preference?" Kelsey's response emphasized survival, health, and practicality. She also integrated how much we take electricity for a granted while stressing the value that electricity brings to our daily lives. Congratulations, Kelsey! Thank you for your participation in this year's essay contest and enjoy your trip to Washington D.C.
