student trip to nation’s capital
Co-op selects Flathead
High senior for Youth to Washington tour
Brooke Eckelberry,
a senior at Flathead High School will join a group of other outstanding
Montana students on a trip to Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Montana
Electric Cooperatives’ Association.
Brooke was selected as Flathead Electric’s
representative on the basis of an essay she wrote, answering the question
“Imagine Yourself as a freshman legislator in the 2005 Legislative Session.
What are the top two issues you would focus on and why?”
Brooke chose the issues of providing a quality
education for Montana students and enacting a measure prohibiting open
containers of alcohol in a vehicle.
Last year 27 Montana students made the trip to the
nation’s capital, where they learned about electric cooperatives, American
history and U.S. government.
Students visit Montana’s congressional representatives
and see the sights around Washington, D.C. This year’s tour is scheduled for
June 18-23.
Brooke, the daughter of Mark and Jill Kaufman and Rick
Eckelberry, has a 3.667 grade-point average and is involved in many school
and extra-curricular activities. She has been involved with the Upward Bound
college preparatory program for several years and has worked with youth
athletic programs including Rotary basketball and coaching T-Ball. She also
has volunteered at a local elementary school and served as a Lunch Pail Pal
through Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
She plans to attend Northern Arizona University in
Flagstaff, studying art history and art education.
Her goal in life is “To live a prosperous and happy
life doing the things I love with the people I adore.”
Congratulations to Brooke on being selected to
participate in the tour.
